For most of us, having a bicycle is not a big deal. But for an individual experiencing homelessness in Northwest Arkansas a bike can make a huge difference.
How much of a difference? One veteran at 7hills uses his bike to get to the V.A. hospital for work each morning before the buses start running. Another 7hills client uses her bike in conjunction with the bus system to make it to job interviews on time. And a husband and wife use their bikes to attend an evening budgeting class at the 7hills community offices.
The cost of owning and maintaining a personal vehicle is one of the most significant financial burdens a struggling family faces. And while our public transportation system is growing, it is not sufficient to meet all transportation needs in many cases. Fortunately, the bicycle trail system offers an excellent alternative and supplement to other transportation options. Not only is it free, it also offers riders great physical and psychological health benefits. You can see why 7hills is excited to offer this program to individuals ready to change gears and take their life in a new and better direction.
In the past, we have posted requests for bicycles on a case by case basis. But recently the need for bikes has increased dramatically. A recent survey within our housing programs determined there are more than 20 good candidates for bicycles. These bikes are for people who will use them to get to the store, make it to a job interview, and attend a 7Hills educational class.
We are asking for 24 adult bikes in usable condition starting today. We also need helmets, lights, bike locks, and any other accessories which facilitate their safe and effective use. 7hills will be glad to arrange for pick up at any location in Northwest Arkansas. This need is exploding which means a bicycle donation is a powerful way for you to make a positive impact in someone’s life today.
If you would like to donate any of these items please email [email protected] We look forward to hearing from you!
And as always, thank you for joining 7hills in our mission to fight homelessness and poverty in our local community.
